Homemade Cookies

There is something special about baking cookies from scratch. The dough tastes more delicious than store bought dough. That mouthwatering smell that wafts through the kitchen as the cookies are baking. The whole process, from measuring out the flour to pulling the cookies out of the oven, makes you feel like a bona fide baker. And, most importantly, the cookies just taste better. Baking cookies from scratch might seem like a big undertaking, but it really isn't, and it is well worth the extra fifteen minutes. The important thing is to have the ingredients on hand. Below are the ingredients most Chocolate Chip Cookie recpies call for. 2 eggs, 2 and 1/4th cup flour, 2 cups softened butter, 3/4 cup sugar, 3/4 cup brown sugar, 1tsp salt, 1tsp baking soda, 2 tsp vanilla, and as many chocolate chips as you like! Baking cookies is a fun to do by yourself or with friends and family. And it is a great activity to do during the winter months when you are cooped up inside. Homemade cookies are also a great treat to bring to a holiday party or as a housewarming gift. It may be simple, but homemade chocolate chip cookies fresh from the oven with a glass of cold milk is one of life's small pleasures.

Indulge in a Guilty Pleasure- DVD Marathons!

When you aren't feeling well or are just feeling lazy, nothing beats watching hours of newly discovered or long time favorite tv shows. I have been sick for the past few days (apologies for not posting) and I have had some quality time with my DVD player. This isn't a guilty pleasure I would recommend you indulge in every day, but every once in a while it feels great to sit back and have a marathon of your favorite show. Here are a few of my favorite shows that I can watch for hours....

FRIENDS- a classic that can always cheer me up. Some of my favorite memories from college are of me and my roommates all piled in one bed laughing together while we watched episode after episode of FRIENDS.

Sex and the City- Another great one to watch with girlfriends. The witty dialogue combined with the great characters make guarantee hours of entertainment.

Planet Earth- Discover how amazing our world really is. Travel the globe and see some of the most incredible sights in nature without ever leaving your living room. This is a wonderful one to watch with family, friends, or on your own.

The Big Bang Theory- Quirky and entertaining. Worth watching just for the character Sheldon. He is a physics genius with no social skills, and he makes me laugh till tears run down my cheeks. I love to watch this with my little brother because of all the video game references.

Gilmore Girls- Clever and touching, a definite "feel good" show. Sometimes I find Lorelai a little annoying, but mostly I am charmed by Rory, Luke, and the rest of Stars Hallow.

Enjoy being a couch potato every once in a while.

And that's your daily good thing!

Indulge in a Guilty Pleasure- Ice Cream!

Ice cream is one of my favorite indulgences. I also love gelato, sorbet, frozen yogurt, and popsicles, but ice cream is my personal favorite. As far as I'm concerned any weather is ice cream weather and any occasion is an occasion for ice cream. Getting to eat ice cream all week is definitely the best part about getting my wisdom teeth out. I have yet to meet an ice cream flavor that I don't like, but here are a few of my favorites.

Ice Cream with Mix Ins (like Coldstone or Marble Slab)- Let you imagination go wild and try crazy c0ombinations. At Coldstone I like to get cake batter with reeses peanut butter cups, dark chocolate chips, and grahm cracker crust. But I usually only get the kids size, because it is pretty sweet!

"Thrifty" Ice Cream at Rite Aide- This is the ice cream I grew up on. Great ice cream at a great price. I love Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Mint Chip, or Medieval Madness.

Ben&Jerry's Ice Cream- Can't beat Ben&Jerry's for creativity. Phish Food, Cherry Garcia, Half Baked...I could spend hours just trying samples at the store.

Haagan-Dazs Ice Cream- Classic flavors made with high quality ingredients. Haagan-Dazs is my personal favorite. This week I have been having a lot of Chocolate Peanut Butter and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough with some sliced bannas. Delicious. (pictured above)

I also love Red Bean and Mango Ice cream...both of which I had for the first time in China.

enjoying local flavors at a ice cream stand in China

Ice Cream is a soothing and delicious treat for any occasion, anywhere.

Grab a spoon, a bowl, or a cone and dig in!

And that's your daily good thing!

Indulge in a Guilty Pleasure- Fluff Books

I personally believe that almost any book is a "good book" however some are definitely more worthy than others. That being said, I love to read what I call "fluff" books. Books that haven't won any prizes, most likely won't be taught in school, and are read just for the sheer pleasure of reading a fun book. Books that you don't have to struggle through to read, and that take as much effort as watching a sitcom or drama on TV. These kind of books are great for vacations, the beach, while you are sick, taking your mind off of things, etc. Even if it is "fluff" I like to think that any kind of reading is good for you, and all books have some merit. Here are a few of my favorite "fluff books".

The Sweet Valley High Series. These books are frothy and fun. I loved them in high school and I still like them now. Diablo Cody is even going to make a movie out of them, so they might be making a comeback soon.

The Harry Potter Books. So much fun.

The Twilight Saga. Critics say what you will, but these are fast paced and filled with drama and romance.

Romance Novels by Julie Garwood or Nora Roberts. There is a reason both of these ladies are always on the best seller lists.

I could go on and on...but I think I'll save a few of my other favorite genres and authors for another post. But for now, indulge in a guilty pleasure, pick up a romance novel or cheesy series, and enjoy the fluff!

And that's your daily good thing!

Indulge in a Guilty Pleasure- Reality Shows

I love to read. I love to hike. I love to learn. I love to do things that enrich my mind and my spirit. I also really love a good reality TV show. This week I am getting my wisdom teeth out (all four) so forgive me if my posts seem a little uninspired. While I recuperate I am going to be indulging in a lot of guilty pleasures, so that is the theme for this week. Guilty pleasures...everybody has them and it feels great to indulge in them. Especially when you really need it.

There are a few reality shows that I love to follow. I am going to be watching a lot of reality TV while I recuperate from getting my teeth out. I like to think that they all have their redeeming qualities.

TOP CHEF
This show is awesome. Probably my favorite. The challenges are creative, the food always looks amazing, and in one word, Padma. With beauty, poise, and excellent taste she adds a great flavor to the show. Currently I am watching Top Chef- Las Vegas. In true Vegas style there are high stake quickfire challenges, visits from celebrities like Pen and Teller, and tons of twists. I personally am rooting for Kevin from Atlanta. Check out the website to watch episodes and see recipes from the show. As soon as I can eat solid foods again I am definitely going to try a few.

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE
If I like Top Chef because I love to cook, I like SYTYCD because I know I can't dance. I am blown away by the talent of these dancers! In addition to being incredibly entertained, I also learn about different dances. For example, have you ever heard of the Passodoble? I sure hadn't. My favorite part about watching the show though is when I just really love a performance, but I don't know why. In my very not knowledgeable opinion, that is when a dance is really good, when there is no need for a technical explanation for what made it amazing, it just is. This is a great show for dancers and non dancers alike.

AMAZING RACE
A race around the world! What is not to like? Every episode competing teams go to different parts of the world where they compete in wacky and wonderful activities. It is like the travel channel crossed with the game show network, with a big dose of drama thrown in. I love when the teams go places I have been, but I also love seeing places I have never been to and adding those places to my list of places to go someday.

So whether you have had a hard day, need to relax, or just want to be entertained, indulge in the guilty pleasure of reality TV!
